The observatory was designed as part of a competition launched by the Kielder Partnership and RIBA (Royal Institiute of British Architects) to produce a building that would not only serve as an observatory but compliment the Kielder land and sky scape. The winner was Charles Barclay Architects from London.
Product specification was generated through a CPD presentation, and hence fire retardant timbers are used throughout the construction.
